Module Overview

This 30 credit core module will offer students a range of necessary skills and insights to help prepare them for carrying out research at MA level and specifically for writing their dissertations. Classes will help students improve their use of internet resources and online databases, and also aim to improve the presentation of their work both in terms of academic writing (style, focus, argument) and the citation of sources in notes and bibliographies. Additional classes will provide opportunities for students to practise these skills in relation to country house research.

Learning Outcomes

This module is intended to teach students to:

  • Write, format and word-process work to a high academic standard
  • Produce a formatted bibliography and correctly refer to sources in footnotes
  • Search online articles and bibliographic databases for use in Country House related research
  • Use a variety of sources (e.g. newspapers, architectural drawings, film) to enable different approaches to Country House studies
