Bande Dessinée

Module code: FR2044

Module co-ordinator: Dr Fransiska Louwagie

The bande dessinée, which is called the Ninth Art in French (le Neuvième Art), is an important form of popular cultural expression. This module focuses on 'la bande dessinée franco-belge', generally considered to be the 'cradle' of the neuvième art. It aims to develop students' knowledge and understanding of the medium's specificity and of issues of 'high' and 'low' culture. Students will engage with key concepts in formal analysis and interpretation of bande dessinée.

The module will include introductory lectures, round-table discussions, and student-led presentations based on individual and group research. Students will submit two written pieces and keep a learning journal.

  • One written essay of 2,000-2,500 words (50%)
  • One small-group presentation (sequence analysis), including an individual write-up of 1,500 words (40%)
  • A weekly learning journal (10%)
