European Literature in Translation

In this module, you'll learn about the thematic, narrative, and stylistic features of texts associated with a range of European literary movements. We'll consider the cultural, social, and historical contexts of these texts and draw comparisons and contrasts between them.

Set texts may include:

  • French: La Femme de Gilles by Madeleine Bourdouxhe (1994)
  • Italian:  Filumena Marturano by Eduardo de Filippo (1946)
  • Spanish: The Sleeping Voice [La Voz dormida] by Dulce Chacón (2002)


  • 4 hours of lectures
  • 6 hours of seminars
