Introduction to Francophonie

In this module you will study the salient issues and tensions around the place of French within relevant parts of the Francophone world. We will consider the French language as a reflection of historical and cultural developments as well as national, local, ethnic, gender and postcolonial identities and look at how the language has developed in its varied forms in Francophone countries. We will explore a range of written and visual texts from France, Belgium, Algeria, Quebec, Senegal and sub-Saharan Africa.
