In this module, you'll learn how to translate Old English with facility and precision, analyse the linguistic characteristics of Old English texts, and assess the value of different kinds of textual material as evidence for the phonology of Old English.

Learning

The module is taught through two-hour seminars, during which we'll work with a range of texts in Old English. You'll learn key vocabulary and grammar through a variety of translation and linguistic exercises. 

Assessment

  • Online language tests (20%)
  • A 2,000-word essay on Old English language (40%)
  • A 2,000-word linguistic analysis of a piece of Old English (40%)
