Polymer composite materials like carbon-fibre reinforced plastic are used in high-performance engineering systems from aircraft to consumer goods. In this module you will learn how these materials get their excellent strength and stiffness whilst also being lightweight. You will be able to undertake design calculations that predict the properties of composites made of different material types and configurations and use this to design simple components with conflicting design drivers. The methods cover both the fundamental materials science and the practical methods used in industry to design, using this exciting, modern material.
