Specialist Assessment and Teaching of Pupils with Specific Learning Difficulties - Dyslexia 2

This option is designed to give you the opportunity to deepen your understanding of SpLD (dyslexia) and to qualify as a specialist assessor of literacy difficulties of children from 5 to 19 years. An appropriate educational setting is essential to allow you to access pupils with learning difficulties and complete the assessment and specialist teaching elements of the course. You will learn how to use a range of assessments and complete written reports on findings. You will further develop your specialist teaching knowledge by looking at a range of evidence-based dyslexia-friendly strategies and programmes.

  • The support of an accredited tutor. If you live outside Leicestershire you will need to find a local accredited tutor. The University can provide advice on how to do this.

  • A case study based on the first-hand observation of an assessment of a primary–age pupil.

You will need to buy - or at least have access to  - a own copy of CTOPP-2, the Comprehensive Test of Phonological Processing, second edition.

Assessment

Two written assignments: 

  • Specific learning difficulties: specialist assessment of literacy difficulties: an annotated bibliography
  • A special study based on findings of an in-depth assessment completed for the BDA component of the course

British Dyslexia Association (BDA) component of the course

In addition to the two written assignments for your MA in Education: Learning and Teaching, you will also work towards satisfying the requirements of accreditation as an associate member of the British Dyslexia Association (BDA). Successful completion of the BDA accreditation leads to a qualification as a specialist assessor.

You'll need to produce:
  • At least three diagnostic reports and one assessment observation
  • Teaching file recording ten hours of teaching and one lesson observation
  • Reflection on legal issues and dyslexia friendly schools
  • Reflection on professional development as a specialist teacher
