- Scientific ethics, reasoning and communication: language, logic and philosophy employed by scientists in the context of some of the major challenges and problems faced by science in the 21st century; presenting reasoned and rational arguments on paper, in spoken presentation and in formal debate; critical assessment and appraisal of arguments.
- Environmental chemistry: risk assessment and risk management of pollution; water treatment and the fate of pollutants in the hydrosphere; atmospheric chemistry and contemporary problems of atmospheric pollution including photochemical smog, the greenhouse effect and damage to the ozone layer.
