  • Organic structures and how they are determined by spectroscopic methods
  • Structure and reactivity of important functional groups and the interconversions of these groups in the synthesis of organic compounds
  • Mechanism of reactions and how these are used as a means of classifying these reactions and predicting the results of new reactions
  • Chemistry of the carbonyl group including the synthesis and reactivity of aldehydes and ketones, carboxylic acids and derivatives (esters, amides, etc.)
  • Chemistry of alcohols and amines
