This module will introduce you to the key issues surrounding substance users and the social factors that affect their substance misuse. We will consider the complex needs of some substance users and the approaches and interventions available. We will also look at the effects of early abuse and neglect on clients and their subsequent substance misuse and other problems.

You will learn hot to identify biopsychosocial factors which may contribute to drug or alcohol misuse or deterioration in mental health, including physical, sexual and emotional abuse. You will learn how to use risk assessment tools to make an initial assessment of a client's risk to themselves and others, and we will discuss the question of when, where and how to refer on to other professionals.
