In this module we will explore how isolation, environmental disturbance and environmental gradients contribute to global patterns of biodiversity. We will consider the impact of both major climatic cycles and human activities on biodiversity and the environment. We will evaluate future projections of environmental degradation and biodiversity loss - and strategies to mitigate for human impact.


This module is studied by distance learning. Methods include: 

  • Guided online and printed resources
  • Video
  • Online discussion board/tutorials
  • Guided independent study


  • 3 x essays, 750 word each (50%)
  • Engagement with (and quality of contributions to) an online discussion forum (15%)
  • Essay based on discussion board topic, 2,000 words (35%)
