The Diversity of Organisms and Principles of Taxonomy

Module code: AE1731

Module co-ordinator: Dr Kate Moore

In this module you will study the theory of evolution by natural selection and the principles which underpin modern taxonomy: the major plant and animal groups and how they are organised by taxonomists. You will learn how to define biological diversity within biological communities and within species. We will use dichotomous keys to identify plant and animal specimens and interpret field observations in terms of taxonomic classification.

This module is studied by distance learning. Methods include:

  • Guided online and printed resources
  • Online discussion/tutorial
  • Guided independent field exercises

  • Ecological sampling exercise field report, 2,000 words (50%)
  • 3 x study support exercises, 750 words each (50%)
