Contemporary European Cinema

This module will examine post-1990 European cinemas' responses to diverse social, political, historical and economic issues. We will explore the expressions of a ‘European identity’ and its ‘others’ in contemporary mainstream and art-house film. We will pay particular attention to significant styles and movements such as the New Extremism, migrant and diasporic film, the new social realism, Scandinavian horror and Eastern European new waves.
