Multilingual and Multicultural Communities

Module code: EN3205

The module will explore bilingual/multilingual data and communities in the UK and around the world. The module will cover topics in multilingualism from two perspectives, multilingualism at the level of individual (e.g. language choice, diglossia, code-switching) and multilingualism at the societal level (e.g. the co-existence of more than one language in a society and some consequences of language contact – language maintenance, language shift, language death, language endangerment). You will gain experience in preparing a small scale research project that will enable them to reflect critically on their own and others’ use of language(s). The module aims to help you develop an understanding of multilingual/multicultural communities and to be able to investigate results of languages in contact. Examples will be drawn from bilingual communities within the UK and around the world.
