MSc Research Project

Module code: CH7362

Your MSc research project will be a substantial, original and impactful contribution to chemistry research conducted in one of the School’s specialist research areas. You will be working at the forefront of chemistry, undertaking pioneering research which will help to unlock understanding and knowledge about your chosen topic. It will set you up perfectly for a career in research chemistry.

You will need to work both independently and in close collaboration with your supervisor and other members of their research team. You will need to plan your time effectively, keep accurate records and manage the storage of your data. It will almost certainly involve problem solving on a regular basis in order to overcome unforeseen obstacles or navigate around unpredictable outcomes.

At the end of the project you will produce a comprehensive research report to a high standard and present your findings to a non-expert audience. In addition, you will take part in a viva examination, which is an oral presentation where you will defend your report. This will test your understanding of your work and its context compared to existing research.

The ability to produce and defend a report based upon original and pioneering research will be invaluable as you move on to a career, whether that be as a research chemist or in all walks of professional life.
