Leadership and Management in Perioperative Practice

You will be given the opportunity to manage your own clinical workload, that of your immediate team and subsequently that of the department under the supervision of an appropriate mentor. The experience will include both elective and unplanned care situations and should afford you the opportunity to manage all associated resources and conflicts, alongside supporting, clearly communicating with and leading the multidisciplinary team. In addition to this, you should be actively involved in any local clinical audit process to afford you the opportunity to experience the execution, reporting and collation of results (as appropriate) and the subsequent feedback process to the staff, giving you an insight to the audit process and the impact on clinical care.
You will be introduced to the concepts of organisational culture, leadership and management styles and techniques. We will cover how to manage change, including strengths, weaknesses, opportunity and threat analysis, risk management and managing conflict and the application to an inter-professional working environment - promoting a multidisciplinary approach to the principles of multidisciplinary team working.
You will come to understand clinical governance and contribute to the process of risk management and audit, using evidence-based practice, to then evaluate practice systematically. This, in turn, will influence your understanding of quality, service improvement, outcome measures and audit trails.
Assessment is linked to the academic aspects of the programme will give you the opportunity to use and develop your report-writing skills.
