Equations of Mathematical Physics

Module code: MA4002

This module will develop your understanding of partial differential equations, their classifications, solutions and applications. We will take a more in-depth look at Fourier series and some special functions in solving partial differential equations. In this module you will identify the classifications of linear PDE and apply the concepts of eigenfunctions, eigenvalues, and a Green function in solution of partial differential equation. You will start to apply mathematical principles and derive basic equations of mathematical physics and analyse the limits of their applications. We will also introduce time-dependent PDE for 2D and 3D systems and demonstrate how to solve them. You will demonstrate your understanding of mathematical physics by producing a written independently researched project report on a specified topic in this area.
