Ore Genesis
Module code: GL4107
At this point in your degree programme, you will already know about the different mineral deposit types and some of the theories about how they form. Now, through a process-based understanding of how ore deposits are created, you will improve your ability to predict the location of new deposits - particularly those in new terrains or buried under cover.
This module culminates in a team exercise in which you will interpret a dataset on a new deposit and generate your own genetic model.
Topics covered
- The techniques used to provide data for genetic models, such as temperature, composition, amounts and flowpaths of hydrothermal fluids and how they vary in space and time
- How to use this information to analyse ore genetic studies, both in literature and collected data
Learning
- 2 hours of lectures
- 34 hours of practical classes and workshops
- 114 hours of guided independent study
Assessment
- Exam, 2 hours (60%)
- Coursework - exercise 1 (15%)
- Coursework - exercise 2 (25%)
