Archaeology, Religion and Belief

Module code: AR3553

Religion, belief and ritual have been important to humans for many millennia, yet such things are very difficult to understand from the archaeological record. What we mean by religion and ideology is discussed, and this is followed by a consideration of the different ways in which they have been identified and studied in archaeology. You will analyse examples of interpretations of rock art as a religious expression, along with a whole range of other case studies, such as the importance of places and spaces in religious practice.
