‘Behavioural neurobiology’ will provide an understanding of the processes by which nervous systems generate adaptive behaviours in a wide range of animals. Topics will range from the sensory systems and neural networks involved in fish electroreception, bat echolocation and barn owl auditory prey localisation. You will find out how individual neurons and neuronal networks act together to generate patterned motor outputs which allow animals to interact with their complex and dynamic environments. This module will also explore how early experience affects the wiring and maturation of brain circuits dedicated to sensory processing. Finally, you will see how simple reflexive behaviours of invertebrates can be used to study the cellular basis of learning and memory. This module provides a solid foundation for third year modules in neurobiology and neuroscience, particularly BS3064 - Comparative Neurobiology.
