In a topic that interests you, you'll write a dissertation that investigates our present understanding and uncertainties about this topic. This will give you an in-depth understanding of the topic and will provide you with the necessary skills for more extended scientific work. For example, this may be your fourth-year independent research project or a report for the company that you work with after you graduate.

Topics covered

There are no formal topics covered in this module. However, on completion of this module you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of a geological topic
  • Assemble geological information from a variety of sources (primarily literature and the internet) and compile that information in a formatted report
  • Make informed decisions about the quality of information obtained
  • Develop and implement a personal plan of work to meet a deadline
