Japanese Language Proficiency Test Prep-course - Levels N3, N2 and N1

This 10-week course aims to prepare participants to successfully take the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) at advanced levels N3, N2 and N1. The training intends to further develop and consolidate participants' Japanese language skills in five areas: grammar, vocabulary, kanji, reading comprehension and listening comprehension. Participants taking this course should have completed an Intermediate or Upper-intermediate level for JLPT N3, an Advanced or Post-Advanced level for N2 and a Proficiency level for JLPT N1, or equivalent training.

This course starts in April 2021. This will be blended learning. It comprises 10 hours of group sessions and 20 hours of asynchronous learning on Coursesites VLE.  

This course will be taught in a group of minimum 6 and maximum 12 students.

Entry Level

N3: You are able to understand Japanese text written in Kana and Kanji with some support. You are confident when speaking about yourself and can talk about something that you are interested in. You have reached a level similar to a CEFR B1 or completed the Intermediate (level 3), or the Upper-intermediate (level 4), or you have enough knowledge to be on track with the course.

N2: You are able to understand Japanese text written in Kana and Kanji. You are familiar with at large number of Kanji and confident when speaking about yourself and can talk about something that you are interested in. You have achieved a level similar to a full CEFR B1 or started the B2 or completed the Advanced (level 5) or you have enough knowledge to be on track with the course.

N1: You read Japanese texts written in Kana and Kanji with ease. You are familiar with at very large number of Kanji. You speaking confidently about a variety of subjects and can talk about something that you are interested in even if you don't know the topic. You have achieved a level similar to a full CEFR B2 or started the C1 or you have enough knowledge to be on track with the course.

Course Content

There will be a group session every Thursday. The course will provide information about the JLPT and adequate amount of sample questions to help you ready for the exam. It will be done by individuals, pair or group. Following the induction and initial assessment during the first week's session, 4 hours of Grammar, 5 hours of Reading, 4 hours of Kanji & Vocabulary and 2 hours of Listening section practice in the class during the course will be provided. In addition, you will be given homework (including the Kanji and vocabulary list to memorise) to complete at home. In the 9th week's session, a mock test will be carried out and you will receive feedback during the last session. The last week will provide revisions or additional work following to the outcome of your mock test.

Aim of the course:

  • Provide information about the JLPT and same format of the exam questions to help learners to familiarise the exam.
  • To revise grammar and vocabulary
  • To increase vocabulary, improve reading skills and listening skills.
  • To improve communication skills
  • To form a community of people who has same interests and help maintain your motivation

Course Structure

Group sessions (Zoom meeting):

  • Share or reflect your questions from weekly tasks
  • Topic base Communication activities
  • Learn new vocabulary by playing games with co-learners
  • Discuss about topic in Japanese
  • Revise expressions through role-play

Weekly tasks (Course Sites by Blackboard):

  • Different category every week (see the content above)
  • Tasks will be open on Thursday after the group session. Complete and hand it in within a week.
  • Your tutor will mark and provide you feedback
  • Complete at least one task every week (up to 3 different tasks available)
  • Complete tasks your own time
  • All the levels of tasks are available. It is your chance to revise previous level or try out next level depending on your wish. (For example; you usually complete N4 level of tasks, you could try one Kanji task one week to see your improvements.)

Our approach

The tutor - Junko Tamaki has 20 years of experience of teaching Japanese. She has taught in universities in Japan and the UK. She has been teaching all the levels (Beginners to

Advanced) at Languages at Leicester, University of Leicester since 2007. She has delivered JLPT training at Japanese languages schools in Tokyo for all the levels. A member of BATJ (The British Association for Teaching Japanese as a Foreign Language) and NKG (Nihongo Kyoiku Gakkai [The Society for Teaching Japanese as a Foreign Language]).

This course is taught in Japanese. English is only used when necessary or requested by students in particular situations or grammar explanations. The programme aims to develop the language skills in five areas, which are assessed when taking JLPT exams. These skills are grammar, vocabulary, kanji, reading comprehension and listening comprehension. The training also supports comprehensive and productive skills through authentic based activities and guided practice in the use of the Japanese language. Students will be encouraged to seek opportunities to learn and practise these skills outside the classroom taking advantage of learning resources provided by tutors and the programme. For each guided learning hour, students would be expected to do another 3 independent learning hours per week. The group size is limited to 12 students and planned to allow intensive interactive practise with individual feedback and advice on progress.
