Cartoonathon: Youth Dialogue on Social Media

Cartoon of three fishes in size order, first one being chased by the second, the second being chased by the third and a plastic bag chasing the third fish.5 - 29 November 2021

A 3-week long take-over between 5 - 29 November 2021 of the Instagram account of our partner organisation, Shout Out UK. The take-over will involve posts of cartoons responding to three core themes (environment, inequality, COVID-19), Instagram lives with professional cartoonists, and cartooning tutorials, in collaboration with Cartooning for Peace.

The take-over will culminate in a cartoon competition for 15-25 year-olds: there will be three parallel competitions, one responding to each core theme and each with a prize of a £50 gift card. Cartoons will be judged by a group of professional cartoonists and a winner will be announced on the final day of the campaign. Submissions can be made by emailing lias@le.ac.uk with the subject line 'Cartoonathon submission' or by posting on Instagram with the hashtag #SOUKCartoonathon no later than midnight on 25 November 2021. Winners will be announced w/c 29 November 2021.

The event aims are:

  • To provide young people with the tools to engage with (i.e. read, understand, and create) social issues through the medium of political cartoons
  • To provide young people with a platform to share their own social/political opinions via the medium of political cartoons. The event will focus on three debates that we know directly impact young people today: environmental awareness, social inequalities, and the COVID-19 pandemic.

This event emerges from the broader AHRC-funded Covid in Cartoons project and is held in association with our partners Shout Out UK, Cartooning for Peace, and the Cartoon Museum.
