Course Description

The MA in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) offers you the opportunity to develop your essential teaching skills and professional knowledge. The course is designed to provide a thorough grounding in both the theory and practice of English language teaching.

This is a rigorous qualification which provides you with strong all-round skills development and up-to-date subject knowledge. It is highly valued by educational employers and will help to raise your profile when seeking to launch or advance your career as a language teaching professional.

This postgraduate degree will provide you with the basic practical skills you need to enter a language classroom with confidence and enhance your subject knowledge of the English language. You will develop your language teaching ability at a range of levels, in different cultural and institutional contexts. You will also have an opportunity to develop an understanding of professional issues related to English language teaching and learning.

You will be supported by a personal tutor who, where possible, will remain with you throughout the course , and you will also have access to the full range of university support services. Participating in the learning activities and accessing the academic support services available to University of Leicester students will also help you develop your fluency and accuracy in speaking, listening, reading and writing.

If you have a particular interest in lexis (vocabulary), you can specialise in Lexical Studies. This involves taking both the 'Words and Dictionaries' and 'Corpus Approaches to Lexis' modules and writing your Professional Enquiry or Dissertation on a related topic. This entitles you to an MA in 'TESOL with Lexical Studies' when you graduate.

Course Structure

Teaching and Assessment

Your teaching will consist of lectures, seminars and workshops, with tutorial support. You will be assessed through written assignments and some tests, presentations and project work, depending on the particular module. You will be encouraged to develop your transferable skills, including IT and communication skills.

Entry Requirements

  • 2:2 or above in a relevant subject, or equivalent.
  • Some language teaching experience or previous teacher training to show your engagement with, and commitment to, teaching English as a second or foreign language.
English Language Requirements

IELTS 6.5 or equivalent, with at least 6.0 in each component score. If your first language is not English, you may need to provide evidence of your English language ability. If you do not yet meet our requirements, our English Language Teaching Unit (ELTU) offers a range of courses to help you to improve your English to the necessary standard.
