Reliable Embedded Systems

MSc, PGCert, 1 year-27 months, by blended learning

This is for you if... you are a graduate or professional looking for IET accredited CPD in the Embedded Systems field designed to allow you to study while continuing your full time working life. You may be looking to retrain, to update skills, or to enhance existing qualifications. Applications are welcome from anyone with an appropriate combination of academic achievement and industrial experience.

Course Description

The combination of constantly shrinking technology and ever-increasing on-chip power density and temperature operation has significant impact on the continuing reliability of embedded systems. This is due to effects like process variability, transient faults and accelerated aging. Transient faults or premature failure of tiny semiconductor components such as processors or GPUs can lead to significant financial loss or even loss of life.

There is a real need for reliability-oriented designs which can provide reliable and dependable embedded systems operation while meeting the growing requirements for high performance and energy-efficiency in aerospace, automotive industries and other major sectors.

This MSc covers a wide range of topics which underlie the design and verification of reliable embedded systems, including both software and hardware development methods and techniques. We will focus on currently relevant tools and best practice, and cover the development of both COTS (commercial off the shelf) systems and bespoke designs based on Field Programmable Gate Arrays.  We will also explore large scale embedded systems development and maintenance.

The course of delivered through 'blended learning': a combination of distance learning and campus study in Leicester (six one-week residentials over two years).

PGCert

Alternatively you can study for a Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert), which consists of just four modules and omits the final project. If you initially apply for a PGCert, you can upgrade to an MSc during your course, or up to two years afterwards, on payment of the appropriate fee.

Teaching and Assessment

Each module is delivered during the residential week, in an intensive five-day format. Each of the first four days begins with a 2-3 hour lecture (with appropriate breaks) followed by a 30-minute lunch and then lab work. Each lab assignment is submitted before the beginning of the next lecture. In total, there are four lab assignments with two of them being assessed. The purpose of Day 5 is to provide sample solutions and exercise feedback, as well as to introduce you to the module case study.

In each module you will be assessed on your lab exercise (40%) and your coursework (60%). If, for whatever reason, you fail a module, you can resit it as an exam.

The Distance Learning Student Support Officers will be your first point of contact, able to answer any questions you might have about the course, your personal progression or the residentials in Leicester. If your question is academic in nature they will direct you to the appropriate module tutor.

You will be assigned a personal tutor for the duration of your studies. Your personal tutor will be an academic member of staff who will offer advice and guidance throughout your studies. You will have virtual, online meetings with your personal tutor at relevant points throughout the course.

When you reach the project stage (MSc only), you will be assigned a supervisor whose area of expertise aligns with your chosen topic. Your supervisor will support you throughout your project with detailed feedback and one-to-one discussion.
