Increased competition and recent economic shifts in domestic and global markets, together with higher expectations from consumers, create the need for increasingly sophisticated marketing.  The MSc in Marketing by flexible, distance learning will equip you the requisite knowledge of contemporary marketing practices to allow you to take on these challenges.  Your understanding of marketing strategy, marketing research methods and digital marketing are developed alongside the practical skills needed to help you make a difference.

You will consider marketing across a range of business contexts including consumer, industrial, service and not-for-profit sectors, as well as studying business to business, branding and communications strategies in local and international contexts.

You will have opportunities to learn about industry practice and emerging trends in various sectors.  insights that could help you to determine your future career in marketing.

In addition you will develop practical transferable skills including the ability to conduct independent marketing research, problem solving, presenting and planning. The skills and knowledge gained during the course will enable you to develop your career, your professionalism or move into further study or academia.

  • A good second class honours degree from a British university, or its equivalent
  • Or a postgraduate diploma from a recognised institution
  • Or a relevant graduate level professional qualification alongside substantial relevant work experience

If you do not hold a relevant qualification but have three or more years of substantial work experience in marketing then you can be considered for the course based on providing a copy of your CV and a personal statement of 500-1,000 words detailing your suitability and relevant work experience.

English Language Requirements

IELTS 6.5 (7.0 in writing preferred) or equivalent. If your first language is not English, you may need to provide evidence of your English language ability.

You'll have the opportunity to visit the School of Business to attend our week-long Leicester Masterclass held every August at Brookfield. The Leicester Masterclass is a great opportunity to meet your tutors and network with your distance learning students.

Teaching and learning

Teaching

As a distance learning student you will receive support throughout the course from module tutors and personal tutors.

You will use module study books - available in hard copy and electronically - and Blackboard, our virtual learning environment. This will give you online access to materials to support each module, discussions forums hosted by module tutors and chat rooms where you can network with fellow students.

You will be invited to attend our Leicester Masterclass held on campus at the University. This week-long programme of lectures, activities and workshops takes place every August/September and is open to students on any School of Business flexible distance learning course at any point in their studies.

Assessment

You will be assessed at the end of each module either by an exam or written assignment which is usually between 3,000 to 4,000 words. Your final piece of work, the dissertation, is 15,000 words.

Exams are held on a Saturday except in the Caribbean and Americas where they are held on a Friday. UK based students take their exams in Leicester and, elsewhere, we offer an exam venue free of charge within a few hours travel from your location. 

Distance Learning

Online learning is an important feature of this course, therefore it is essential that you have reliable, regular access to the internet (preferably with a broadband connection) in order to participate.

As a distance learning student, you will have access to the University Library's electronic service, the Leicester Digital Library, which includes a large number of e-journals and e-books.

If you live close to Leicester you can, of course, visit the Library and School of Business facilities in person. For UK-based students who wish to use other libraries, we can issue you with a card which allows you to do so. This is a national scheme which allows distance learning students to borrow material from up to three other participating libraries.
