Course description
The iBSc (Psychology) is an optional extra year of study in which you can take a break from medical learning and broaden your horizons, drawing on the expertise of academics in the University of Leicester's College of Life Sciences. You will have the opportunity to research a psychology-related subject which is important to you, and to produce work which may lead to poster presentations at conferences or even publication in medical journals.
An intercalated BSc is an unparalleled opportunity for you to study something in depth without the daily pressures of the medical curriculum. You can take a step back after the first two or three years of your Medical Degree, reflect on how far you have come, and look to your future career. With an intercalated BSc you will have an additional qualification, and additional knowledge and experiences that will be to your advantage when you are applying for jobs or further training.

You will need to have completed year 3 or 4 of your medical course, and be in the 9th decile or above of your degree. External candidates require a permission to intercalate letter from their current medical school

English Language Requirements
IELTS 6.5 or equivalent. If your first language is not English, you may need to provide evidence of your English language ability. If you do not yet meet our requirements, our English Language Teaching Unit (ELTU) offers a range of courses to help you to improve your English to the necessary standard.

UK Students
In financial terms your intercalated year is no different from the other years of your degree so your fee will be the same as it would be if you were continuing on your Medical Degree without taking an iBSc.

International Students
In financial terms your intercalated year is no different from the other years of your degree so your fee will be the same as it would be if you were continuing on your Medical Degree without taking an iBSc.
From 2022 onwards, EU nationals will pay the International fee. If you are an EU national with settled or pre-settled status under the EU settlement scheme, you may qualify for the UK fee (subject to criteria).

iBSc in Psychology
The BSc Psychology (Intercalated) is open to students who wish to intercalate after Year 2, 3 or 4 of the Medical Curriculum, provided they meet the eligibility criteria.
Core modules cover aspects of biological psychology, mental health and wellbeing, individual differences, clinical psychology and health psychology. The available option modules cover a variety of applied and broadly clinically relevant areas of psychology to provide a breadth of understanding of the nature of the field. You will also complete a critical literature review in a pertinent psychological issue as your dissertation.
