Course description

The International Standard ISO 26262 Road Vehicles — Functional Safety covers the development of safety related electrical and electronic systems in road vehicles. It has a significant impact on the way that such systems are designed, developed, integrated and validated and is considered to represent the state-of-the-art in automotive electronic systems development.

This functional safety training course draws on direct practical experience of applying the standard with delegates benefitting from MIRA’s collective experience of automotive functional safety and ISO 26262 which currently totals over 150 years gained in vehicle manufacturer and supplier environments.

Course options

This course can also be offered in-house and tailored to specific company requirements or projects. This option typically lasts three to four days depending on the modules taught.

Courses can also be offered on ISO 13849, IEC 61508 and other standards for functional safety.

On this course you will become familiar with the certification requirements for using , the functional safety standard for road vehicles. You will learn how to define and present a safety plan for a safety-related embedded system, and how to perform hazard analysis and risk assessments.

The course covers:

  • Automotive functional safety – what is it and why does it matter?
  • A brief history of the development of ISO 26262
  • The relation of ISO 26262 to other standards and guidelines
  • Introduction to key concepts of ISO 26262 including safety lifecycle, ASILs, safety goals and safety requirements
  • The detailed requirements of each part of ISO 26262
  • Recommendations for adopting the standard

Teaching and learning

The course will be delivered in the following way:

  • 12 one-hour lectures
  • 25 one-hour practical sessions

You will be taught at the MIRA Technology Institute (MTI) based on the MIRA Technology Park (MTP) near Nuneaton, Warwickshire.
