Course description

Understanding how the brain works is considered as one of the primary challenges for 21st century science, inspiring ambitious neuroscience research programs around the world including the EU flagship Human Brain Project, the BRAIN Initiative in the USA, and the China Brain Project. Computational and theoretical approaches form a vital part of these neuroscience projects, and are of increasing importance in academic and industrial neuroscience applications. 

This one-year, full-time postgraduate degree covers theoretical and practical aspects of modern computational neuroscience, and their applications in areas of cellular, systems and cognitive neuroscience. You will learn the basics of neuroscience and how to apply different approaches from artificial intelligence and machine learning into neuroscience data modelling and analysis. The MSc Project will give you substantial experience with the main steps of undertaking a neuroscience research project, including experimental design, data acquisition, analysis and result interpretation.

Entry requirements

2:2 in Psychology, Biological Sciences (or related disciplines), Neuroscience, Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, or Mathematics, or an equivalent international qualification.

Selection will be on the basis of short-listing and interview (in person or via Skype) to assess your overall background knowledge and suitability. You should be able to show some evidence of competence with programming and quantitative analysis.

English Language Requirements

IELTS 6.0 or equivalent. If your first language is not English, you may need to provide evidence of your English language ability. If you do not yet meet our requirements, our English Language Teaching Unit (ELTU) offers a range of courses to help you to improve your English to the necessary standard.

Modules

The programme includes 2 taught modules and the MSc project. For the taught modules, lectures (using PowerPoint presentations), demonstrations, and practical classes running code written in Matlab will be delivered in a room with one computer allocated per student. For the MSc project, you will have weekly meetings with your supervisor.

Why Leicester?

The programme will take advantage of expertise of the Centre for Systems Neuroscience (CSN) staff, whose research bridges the experimental and theoretical worlds.

You'll be exposed to a large variety of research areas in which the department is active in.

The research project is a central part of the programme and will prepare you to conduct research using computational neuroscience methods, either in industry or as part of PhD study.

The course will be run in a dedicated computer lab, with a single computer assigned to each student, which is ideally suited for working in small groups.

Teaching and learning

The taught modules use a combination of lectures, demonstrations, computer-based problem-solving, and directed reading. You will initially work in groups every week to complete formative assessment solving computer-based problems. The first summative assessment is a group computer-based exam, and the second assessment is an individual computer-based exam, where you will need to solve a complex problem with limited time. Finally, you will be assigned a simple individual project which will be assessed through a written report submitted at the end of the semester.

For the MSc project, following project allocation, you will perform a literature review and develop a research protocol. A poster presentation will allow you to introduce your projects to your peers and to discuss the proposed approaches to be carried out. One-to-one meetings with your supervisor will be a constant source of feedback throughout the project. Before the end of the semester, you will show your results to your peers in an oral presentation, which will provide another opportunity for feedback. You will then submit a dissertation (12,000-15,000 words) and you will be finally assessed with a viva voce exam.
