This is for you if... you want to study materials engineering at an advanced level.

Course Description

This degree will provide you with a broad knowledge of the properties, processing, characterisation, design and selection of materials for transportation, energy and aerospace applications.

You will learn how to use computer aided engineering design and mathematical modelling of processes to engineer materials with advanced properties. You will study the relationship between processing, structure and mechanical properties of major classes of advanced engineering materials, and develop the organisational, practical and computational skills necessary to carry out research in advanced materials engineering.

Project

Project

After completing all the modules, you will apply the knowledge you have gained throughout the course to solving an engineering problem at a professional level. You will define the nature of the problem and draw up plans for tackling it, presented as a formal proposal (including a financial costing). Your project supervisor will meet regularly with you for feedback on the project.

Industry placement (optional)

Studying a 'with industry' masters degree is the perfect way for you to enhance your career prospects and deepen your understanding of your specific area of expertise. By experiencing real-world scenarios and applying your skills and knowledge to business challenges, you will gain a unique insight into how your studies can be utilised in industry. This will not only showcase your abilities to future employers, but will also enhance your studies when you return to University to complete your programme.

The 'With Industry' option is not available if you study part-time.

Teaching and Assessment

Teaching methods include lectures and seminars supported by practical and lab work. Assessment is a mix of open and closed exams and continuous assessment. Your dissertation will be assessed separately.

Entry Requirements

Good second class honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject

English Language Requirements

IELTS 6.0 or equivalent. If your first language is not English, you may need to provide evidence of your English language ability. If you do not yet meet our requirements, our English Language Teaching Unit (ELTU) offers a range of courses to help you to improve your English to the necessary standard.
