Sanctuary Summer School 2022

The University of Leicester’s Sanctuary Summer School is a free one-week course aimed at sanctuary seekers who will apply to start an undergraduate degree programme at a UK university in September 2023. Our Summer School is run in partnership with Leicester-based charity After18 and includes campus visits, academic English classes and practical workshops to help you prepare for university.

Course aims

  • Provide tuition in English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and study skills, and resources to enable students to continue to improve these skills after the end of this course
  • Help participants familiarise themselves with UK university life and expectations
  • Give students an overview of the wide range of UG courses and course options available and tips on how to choose the most suitable course and university
  • Go through the university UG application process and timeline
  • Learn how to strengthen your university application and write a strong personal statement
  • Explore funding options including Student Finance loans and university scholarships

Entry requirements

Applicants should:

  • be aged between 17 and 25* (*applicants over the age of 25 will be considered on a case-by-case basis and subject to availability)
  • have an English proficiency level equivalent to or higher than IELTS 4.5 / CEFR B1 / ESOL Entry 3 / Intermediate
  • be aiming to apply for entry onto an undergraduate course for September 2023
  • have the equivalent of level 3 qualifications from their country or the UK (or be on track to gain these by July 2023)
  • be based in Leicester or able to commute easily
  • have one of the following immigration statuses:
    • An asylum seeker - a person who has made a claim for refugee status.
    • A person who has been granted Humanitarian Protection (HP) or Limited Leave to Remain (formerly Discretionary Leave to Remain) in the UK.
    • A refugee - a person who has been granted refugee status by the UK Home Office.
    • A dependant of any of the above status groups, in recognition that they are also from asylum seeking or refugee background, including family members of an asylum seeker whose claim is dependent on a principal applicant OR family members of an individual with refugee or Humanitarian Protection (HP) status who have come to the UK on a Family Reunion visa.
