Event summary

An afternoon session when students can learn about nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), mass spectrometry (MS), infrared spectroscopy (IR) and thin-layer chromatography (TLC). They visit the NMR and MS facilities in the department and run and interpret an NMR spectrum. They also learn how to prepare a sample for IR and how to run a TLC. The visit can be tailored to the specific needs of their curriculum.

Event summary

This event starts with a hands-on practical workshop in the undergraduate teaching labs, where the students carry out an esterification reaction, followed by distillation to purify the product. There is also an interactive chemistry quiz based on this practical experiment. This is a 4-hour activity.
