Botanic Garden and Attenborough Arboretum

Botanica

Note this activity can be linked to the next international sporting event such as the Commonwealth Games, World Cup or the Olympics.

The Botanica programme involves two half-day activities.

A child completing a worksheet in the desert house at the University of Leicester Botanic Garden1. Children take on the role of citizens in an economically developing country and need to decide if hosting an international sporting event with benefit them. They debate, create a poster to present their ideas and vote whether they are for or against the opportunity.

This lively and interactive simulation exercise always raises many practical and ethical issues about how people's livelihoods can be changed relating to to real country situations.

 2. Investigating different biomes around the Botanic Garden

Children visit and compare the temperature, plant life and climate of potential competing countries- desert, tropics, woodland, warm temperate and alpine/tundra.
