Module aims

By the end of this module students should be able to:

  • Demonstrate a critical engagement with a number of contemporary arguments about the transformation of war and conflict in the developing world and the developed world.
  • Demonstrate a critical engagement with the 'new war' debate.
  • Demonstrate a critical engagement with 'traditional' approaches to the causes of war and conditions of peace in international relations.
  • Demonstrate a critical engagement with important new arguments about the causes of war in the developing world and in the former Yugoslavia.
  • Demonstrate a critical engagement with important new arguments about the causes and motivations behind wars that the West has waged since the end of the Cold War.
  • Identify and critically analyse key academic literature on the subject of the transformation of warfare
  • Combine theoretical analysis with empirical detail on appropriate case studies.
