Advanced Topics in Medical Microbiology

Module code: MB3020

Throughout the course of this module we will focus on the molecular mechanisms underlying bacterial virulence, drawing on evidence from the studies of host-pathogen interactions, immune responses, and lessons from history. In this module you will have the opportunity to study the modern approaches for vaccine development, diagnostics and treatment of microbial diseases.

Topics covered

  • Molecular mechanisms of bacterial virulence and host-pathogen interactions
  • Pathogens in clinical settings; applied aspects of medical microbiology
  • Biodefense and dangerous pathogens

Learning

  • 23 hours of lectures
  • 3 hours of seminars
  • 4 hours of tutorials
  • 120 hours of guided independent study
