This module covers the field of Axiomatic Euclidean Geometry through a series of lectures, presentations and group problem solving. It is impossible to cover the whole field in any detail in a short module, so it concentrates on those major ideas and results that developed the basis of contemporary mathematics and rigorous proof techniques.
The material is used as a vehicle to explore and learn the essential mathematical skills of building up a theory from axioms and previously proved results, of constructing rigorous proofs and arguments, of developing geometric intuition and balancing it with the rigour of proof, and of creative problem solving, drawing on techniques and results from the area. Developing good group work strategies and an awareness for workload spread within the group are an important part of the module.
