Understanding Screenplays

Module code: EN3175

This is an introductory module covering the requirements on working as a writer in the film business with an emphasis on scriptwriting. Narrative structure, pacing and plot will be examined in more detail in relation to script writing, and you will also explore the practical film-making requirements that are considered when writing a script. You will gain an appreciation for the technical aspects through the screening of a short film scene, by deepening your understanding of these aspects you can start to apply your creative and technical skills to adapt and write a short screenplay.

Assessment

  • Adapted screenplay, approx. 7 pages (70%)
  • Critical reflective essay, 750 words and a 'pitch' letter (30%)
