Intended Learning Outcomes

Students will become conversant with: key episodes of post-cold war U.S. intervention, the central theoretical issues surrounding these interventions and the contemporary debate over the appropriate U.S. role in international affairs. In addition, students will enhance their: written communication, through the submission of an assessed essay, verbal communication, through the delivery of two presentations and through general contribution to seminar discussion, capacity for independent study, ability to meet deadlines and manage time effectively.

Teaching and Learning Methods

Weekly seminars in which 4 students take part in a debate (2 proposing, 2 opposing a motion), followed by class discussion. Each student takes part in at least two debates.


  • One 1,500 word seminar paper worth 20% of the module mark.
  • One 5,000 word assessed essay worth 80% of the module mark.
