Module Outline

During this module students will develop the skills required to undertake research in human geography, including how to review the literature and come up with their own research questions, how to formulate aims and objectives of their research, select appropriate methodological approaches, consider and address moral and ethical dimensions of research, plan and undertake fieldwork and other forms of data generation, and construct a research proposal.

The module will also involve a field trip to an overseas location where students will be required to apply and develop their research skills, as well as evaluate theoretical ideas in human geography in relation to understanding practices and processes impacting a specific place and the people connected with this place.

The module will lead to the submission of a full dissertation research proposal that will be the basis of students' dissertation research. A dissertation advisor will be available to discuss the develop of their research plans. The research proposal is a qualifying element of this module and a minimum mark of 40% is required in order for the module to be passed.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this module, typical students should be able to:

  • Identify a focussed and viable geographical research project via a literature review
  • Develop a research question
  • Write a research proposal, showing a firm grasp of how to design a research methodology and to recognise and appreciate the moral and ethical issues involved in undertaking research
  • Use appropriate fieldwork techniques for description and analysis of geographical features and collect data relevant to specific research questions and theories
  • Design and undertake an independent piece of fieldwork
