Using our services

Borrowing

University students and staff

University students and staff may borrow up to 40 items, for a minimum of 7 days. If items are not held or recalled for other users they may be kept for as long as needed and will be renewed automatically. The exceptions are locker keys which should be returned when leaving the Library: these are not automatically renewed. Some items are for use in the Library only.

Laptops are available to borrow for use in the Library and across the campus.

Guest borrowers

Guest borrowers may borrow up to 10 items for a minimum of 7 days and up to 4 weeks if items are not held or recalled for other users. Some items are for use in the Library only.

Guest borrowers are unable to borrow laptops as they are for our students only.

As a guest borrower, you are subject to the fines that are charged for the late return of items and you will be charged for any books not returned.

Returning books

Use the self-service equipment to issue and return your books.

Reserving books

If a book or item you require is on loan to another reader you may reserve it by logging onto the Library Search and placing a request. You will be emailed when it is available for collection from the Library Help Desk.

Distance learning students

Students studying on a distance learning module and part-time postgraduate research students may request postal loans, articles from journals and chapters to be supplied directly to them. To request items log onto the Library Search and place a request, selecting the options for distance learning students.

Requesting books and journals from other libraries

You can request items not available in the library from our document supply service if they are for the purposes of personal study or non-commercial research.  Physical items will need to be collected from the David Wilson Library.

Lending books and journals to other libraries

We accept requests for journal articles, book chapters and physical items from libraries in the UK and around the World using a variety of document supply and inter-library loan services.
