School of Chemistry

Research projects

In the later stages of your course (BSc - Level 3 and MChem - Level 4), you will be required to carry out an undergraduate research project. You are able to do a project in any of our research groups. We also offer education-based projects for those students interested in pursuing a career in teaching.

School of Chemistry ranks highly

The School of Chemistry performed extremely well in the latest Research Excellence Framework (REF, the UK system for assessing research quality). Highlights include:

  • 100% of our research assessed as 'world-leading' or 'internationally excellent', one of only six universities to achieve this distinction.
  • We are ranked 22nd in the UK for the overall quality of our research in Chemistry (REF2021 Times Higher Education rankings).

The BSc - Level 3 projects are designed to last for one semester, while the MChem - Level 4 projects span two semesters. These projects give every student a taste of the cutting-edge research we do in the Department. In a lot of cases, students find their results are published in leading journals - so not only will you have experience working on innovative research, you can also boost your CV by having your name on a published article.

Our research activities span the full range of chemical science, including:
