We have strong ties with institutions in China, including Chongqing Medical University and Dalian University of Technology. We also work closely with the China Scholarship Council and offer 25 scholarships for a variety of PhD courses.
Research is at the forefront of ground-breaking work taking place here at Leicester, with 89% of our overall research assessed as world-leading (4*) or internationally excellent (3*) in the Research Excellence Framework 2021. We aim to be carbon neutral by 2040 and champion environmental sustainability.

Leicester is a vibrant and multicultural city with a history stretching back nearly 2,000 years. Every year the city hosts festivals and celebrations such as Lunar New Year, Diwali, and the Caribbean Carnival. The city has been named as the UK's 9th most affordable city for students in Natwest's Student Living Index 2023 and there are plenty of opportunities for part-time work while you study.
Entry requirements
Postgraduate (taught)
- Four-year Bachelors degree from a prestigious university in China (211/985 project universities or ranked in top 1014 Chinese universities): 70% overall if you are applying for an Engineering or science degree, or 75% for an arts, humanities, law or social science degree.
- Other Chinese universities: 75-80% depending on the course.
- Three-year college diploma from a Chinese university: upgrade your diploma to a Bachelor’s degree with minimum 3 years working experience, or have a postgraduate degree before applying for a Master’s degree.
Postgraduate research
- Undergraduate (Bachelors) degree with at least 75% overall, usually in a related subject area, from a recognised Chinese university (depending on the subject that you wish to study and the rank of the university from which you graduated).
- Plus, demonstrate practical knowledge of appropriate research methodologies.
- Where a Master's degree is required, this is indicated in the relevant description on our postgraduate research webpages, together with further information about requirement.
Undergraduate
- National College Entrance Examination (Gaokao): minimum of 75% across all subject areas (except Leicester Medical School).
- A-levels or the International Baccalaureate (IB): please see individual course pages.
